Ann Carman - personal statement
I first became involved with Mission Morogoro in 2013, when I joined the fundraising group climbing Kilimanjaro. Partly my interest was in the personal challenge, but I was also inspired by the cause - hearing the stories and seeing the pictures from the first group's 2012 visit , especially regarding Berega hospital and Tunguli health clinic. It made me realise how lucky I was having had my children in a clean modern hospital , and when asking for sponsorship for the climb, I particularly spoke about the maternity issues.
My first visit was in 2016, when 8 of us went to Tunguli with the aim of supporting the setting up of Tushikamane groups - self-help groups of women in each hamlet, to promote and improve their antenatal care and maternal and child health. During a week of discovery - a beautiful country, and the friendliness, cheerfulness and resilience of the people we met - I was shocked to realise that the basic human right of access to clean water, was actually the most urgent and important problem to solve.
So we are very fortunate to have found SAWA (Sanitation and Water Action), as a working partner. A Tanzanian NGO who work directly with Tunguli people, and MM, which ensures the best use of funds. They have helped the Tunguli residents to build wells and improve sanitation in a sustainable way.
I feel that the direct contact and friendship we have with Tunguli people is a particular joy and so much a part of us, and means that MM supporters can be sure that their donations are used efficiently for what is most needed.
I am looking forward to being a trustee, increasing my involvement with MM, and proud to be part of a small but amazingly effective charity.
